Pacific Jean Paul Gaultier – Spring/Summer 2012

There is a natural confidence and willingness to take risks that comes with the experience and success of couturier.  A daring to channel the dark recesses of one’s right brain to create unique yet wearable new pieces using a mix of materials, patterns, and prints that nobody’s ever dreamed of.  The French Breton-clad Fashion Czar had just recently kicked-off his international five-city retrospective Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier tour and was back in Paris to present his bold new collection on Day 2 of Paris Fashion Week.

In unconventionally modest Gaultier fashion, a modest Spring/Summer 2012 production featured an eclectic mix of tailored looks inspired by the Pacific West Coast, Southern French Riviera, and Scotland Highlands.  Californian beach prints found in a matching jacket, dress shirt and trouser ensemble brought back memories of 1980s Ocean Pacific.  Kitschy Hawaiian floral prints ripped from tourist T-shirts were reworked into dress shirts, trousers, and sports jackets.  Tailored plaids, window-plane checks, houndstooth and printed tweeds looked playful when mixed with jean jackets, floral shirts, and sneakers.  The styling saw sports jackets tucked into trousers, tuxedo pants replaced with shorts, and relaxed pinstriped suits married up with leather biker jackets and plimsolls.

An eruption of creativity and styling brilliance, SS12 Gaultier is about deconstructing sophisticated tailoring and having some fun with it.  Great finale featuring classic Gaultier Breton Tees and gingham swimwear.  Save me one of those doiley-cut dress shirts please.

Second stop for the Men’s Spring/Summer 2012 Collections is Paris Fashion Week, June 23-26, 2011.  As with Milan, should be interesting to see if the monochromatic Parisian men’s collections have adopted any of the muted turquoises, wisteria wave purples, pastels, neutrals, eco-earths and atomic greens the trendsetters have been predicting.  Major labels (not all French) scheduled at Paris Fashion Week this month include Jean Paul Gaultier, Dries Van Noten, John Galliano, Dior Homme, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Lanvin, Paul Smith, Yves Saint Laurent, Thom Browne, and many others.  Fashion week schedule is current as of today’s date:

White Dominates The Red Carpet At Cannes

Cannes Film Festival 64

The 64th Cannes Film Festival kicked off last Wednesday and with only a few days remaining of week-and-a-half long festival, I thought that It’s All Style To Me would highlight some of the elegant Red Carpet looks that were competing for the attention of the paparazzi at Cannes this year.  In spite of the tendency to “color block”, a wave of white was dominant at this year’s Festival, offering a genuine sensation of glamour paying homage to the model of sophistication and timeless grace inspired by the festival’s poster.

The tone was set during the opening ceremony by the dazzling Uma Thurman, who wore an immaculate FW11 Versace white dress bordered with feathers.  A very elegant pair of nude Jimmy Choo’s created a complete silhouette of glamour perfected.  The only hint of colour conceded by the star was through a pair of Chopard emerald earrings and matching bracelet.  Uma, also a jury member, had begun her day in a white Dolce & Gabbana dress (not shown).

The Art of the Automobile: Mr. Ralph Lauren’s Cars

Today marked the inauguration of The Art of the Automobile, Masterpieces from the Ralph Lauren Collection, at Paris’ Musée des Arts Décoratifs.  The exhibit, which runs from April 28th until August 28th, includes 17 of the most incredible cars from the 1930s to present day.  Included in Lauren’s collection are a 1929 Bentley Blower, a 1930 Mercedes-Benz SSK, 1964 Ferrari 250 LM, a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Scaglietti, a 1956/1958 Jaguar XKS and a 1931 Alfa Romeo Monza 8C 2300.  If that wasn’t enough, the exhibit also includes two of the world’s most expensive vehicles: a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO and a 1938 Bugatti 57 SC Atlantic Coupe (1 of 4 made, 1 of 2 that remain).  Each of these cars are estimated to be worth $30-$40 million.  Who says fashion doesn’t pay?

“I don’t ever think of myself as a collector,” said the fashion designer legend.  “In my mind they are like parts of me.  Cars have always inspired me, the details on cars that I’ve loved, and have utilized those details in watches and furniture.  I believe in cars being works of art.  It’s technology, it’s mechanics, it’s details and to me that’s a special kind of art.”  Wish I could find my way to Paris to see this.  Who knows, I’ve got some time until August 28th.  You can check out some of the cars on exhibit below.  For the full collection, please visit the It’s All Style To Me Facebook Page.  Photos c/o Ralph Lauren.
