Dolce & Gabbana Nets A New Look – Spring/Summer 2012

Dolce & Gabbana is one of the most ‘connected’ labels in fashion. More specifically, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana themselves are very active and hands-on with their social media. I’ve even tweeted with Stefano on occasion before his early morning workouts and he’s responded. The boys embrace new technology and advances in social media as a way of to include as wide an audience as possible. Nothing seems out-of-bounds or off the record with these guys. Just check out their YouTube channel or Swide Magazine. Both are full of very candid behind-the-scenes and backstage interviews and footage.
For Spring/Summer 2012, Dolce & Gabbana tapped into their fascination and obsession with the net. They channeled the concept and physicality of the network, drawing inspiration from its metaphorical roots. Soccer and fishermen’s nets, the symbolic foundation of next spring/summer’s T-shirts, sweaters, pants, sports coats, shoes, and jumpsuits. They look interesting enough, but does anyone really want their body looking like a Belgian waffle next year? Yeah, I’m talking about the tan lines.
One-buttoned suits with gorges slightly deeper than past seasons – so nice to see the a reworked classic like the black Dolce & Gabbana suit still in the mix. The suits, skinny ties, single-pleated plum trousers, and pieces where the mesh actually worked were highlights of the collection. The buttoned-up white dress shirt under the classic suit, very fresh and HURTS inspired. Can’t say that I’m big on the ‘net-based’ collection, mainly because as a solo theme, it’s weak. One would expect the net to be but one of many SS12 surprises from a fashion giant such as Dolce & Gabbana.
