Bring On The Cool: DANIER X Greta Constantine Fall/Winter 2011

Last night, Greta Constantine designers Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong unveiled their eagerly anticipated Fall/Winter 2011 Capsule Collection for iconic Canadian leather apparel label DANIER. The launch of SKIN arrives hot off the heels of a successful Greta/Ezra Constantine Fall/Winter 2011 Collection that even had Fashion Television’s Jeanne Beker (click here for interview) beaming with Canadian pride.
Nestled amidst a sea of quaint crack houses, homeless shelters, and a liquor store that sees more action on Sunday than the local community church – Parkdale’s Neubacher Shor Contemporary Gallery hosted a modest SKIN launch in an impressive artistic oasis of a space. Whatever you do, just don’t lean on their outside walls. My wool/angora knit cardigan was covered in red brick residue and enough DNA samples from the wall deposits of vagrants’ bodily fluids to keep a CSI lab busy for weeks.
One of my favourite Canadian models and friend, Madison Schill (FORD) is not just the face for SKIN, but also the muse. I met Madison during LG Toronto Fashion Week a few months ago, where she took time out of her busy runway schedule and backstage exam studying, to share some of her style tips for men. In my opinion, Madison has the makings of the next Coco Rocha. Her look is clean, fresh, she’s full of energy, and she can pull off such a variety looks. Still in her teens, the girl’s attitude is very professional and she is well spoken and mature beyond her years. Seeing Madison dressed in a SKIN leather dress and pair of black brothel creepers was great, but with a six-look collection, one would think that DANIER would have coughed up some cash for a few extra models to present the clothes. Sitting motionless on racks and funky European mannequins just didn’t do the SKIN pieces justice.
Prices for the collection range from $399 for a sleeveless bolero with exaggerated lapel to $999 for an asymmetrical, draped coat with rounded back. Key colour motifs include black, slate, eggplant, walnut, and lava, in a variety of fabrics ranging from Italian lamb leather to silky suede. As part of the capsule, Kirk and Stephen designed a contemporary take on the obi belt, a welcome addition to each look. “We sought to find a happy medium between fashion and function; to offer silhouettes that were appealing to the eye and still flattering on a variety of different body types,” explained Kirk and Stephen.
The collection will be available to the public in twenty DANIER stores nationally, in addition to online at www.DANIER.com for mid-August. I’m very impressed with what the boys have come up with and astounded at the quality of the leather used. Personally, I think that the collection is priced too low for the level of craftsmanship and quality you’re getting, but ladies, that’s their loss and your gain.
