Jeweller To The Stars Damiani Visits Toronto

A few weeks ago, Canadian Jeweller Birks and Italian Jewellery House Damiani partnered to showcase some of Damiani’s exquisite designs at Yorkville’s prestigious Hazelton Hotel. There were some luxurious one-of-a-kind pieces on display, priced somewhere in the neighbourhood of a small bungalow. However, most of the jewellery shown by the 18-time Diamonds International Award winners were from Luca Guadadigno’s Golden Globe and Academy Award nominated motion picture, Io sono l’amore (I am Love). Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton was outfited in Damiani jewels throughout the production of the movie. Swinton finds herself in good company. A-list celebs Isabella Rossellini, Brad Pitt, Nastassja Kinski, Chiara Mastroianni, Milla Jovovich, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sophia Loren, and Sharon Stone have all worked with Damiani as well.
If you haven’t heard of Damiani, you’ve probably seen their jewellery on loan to the stars at red carpet premiers and award ceremonies. Then there’s their two million dollar Victoria’s Secret Bombshell Fantasy Bra. The bejewelled bra worn by model Adriana Lima during the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, was comprised of more than 3,000 brilliant cut white diamonds, light blue sapphires and oval-shaped topazes – all set in 18 karat white gold. It featured an astounding 60 carats of diamonds, 82 carats of sapphires and topazes, and took Damiani craftsmen 1,500 hours of full-time labour to complete. Does it get any more luxurious than Damiani?
Founded in 1924 by Enrico Grassi Damiani, Damiani began designing renowned diamond jewellery for very influential clients. His son, Damiano Grassi Damiani continued the family tradition with great creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. He was the first to introduce Certificates of Authenticity for jewellery pieces, showing details that included the number of carats. Third generation Damiani and Vice President of the Damiani Group, Silvia Damiani has continued the tradition and was on hand in Toronto to take us through the collection. “Our relationship with Birks in Canada is very important for us, and we are happy to be showcasing exclusive pieces from our collections in partnership with our Canadian retail partner,” stated Ms. Damiani.
Interestingly, a recent article in Bloomberg Business Week points to a growing global demand in men’s jewellery. “Sales this year of men’s jewelry priced above $700 will probably rise 9.9 percent to a record $2.54 billion, more than four times the gain forecast for all luxury goods,” explained researcher Euromonitor International. The growth is significant and shows a trend which has been building steadily over the past two years with 8.7% growth in 2010 and 3.8% in 2009. “It’s becoming far more the norm that men are wearing jewellery without being stereotyped,” says Flur Roberts, the head of luxury goods research at Euromonitor. That being said, it’s probably a good thing that Damiani offers a comprehensive Men’s Jewellery Collection in addition to their Women’s Collection. Some of my favourite Damiani pieces from the Men’s Collection (see photo above) include the Metropolitan Dream Rings, the Mailable Diamond Watch, the Accademia Rings, the Blasoni White Gold & Onyx Cufflinks, and the D. Side Pendants. For Birks Damiani Toronto event photos please visit the It’s All Style To Me Facebook Page. For more information on Birks or Damiani please visit www.birks.com and www.damiani.com.
