Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week – Day 1

NYFW - Day1

February 10, NYFW Day 1 – Fashion Week got off on a bit of a rough start for me care of one Air India flight that arrived ahead of us causing US Immigration to grind to a halt at Newark.  It took about as long to clear immigration as it did to fly in from Toronto.  The result?  I ended up missing the NYFW inaugural show by designer Nicholas K.  A snub from a haggard and grumpy Kim Cattrall who apparently doesn’t take photos without a pit crew of makeup artists on hand, added insult to injury.  Stress levels high and vowing to never watch another rerun of Police Academy or Porky’s again, I forged ahead to the Lincoln Center where I picked up my Press Credentials, then headed over to Chelsea’s Milk Studios to catch the International Fashion Bloggers, Evolving Influence conference.

The IFB conference was a great place to meet fellow bloggers and fashion enthusiasts.  Lectures and discussions centered around the business of blogging, its legitimacy in the fashion industry, tips on working with brands, and the rise of the blog as means of influence.  The conference ended with key note speakers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, which was pretty impressive.  Given that they are designers and showing at NYFW, it’s interesting that they would take time out of their hectic schedule to speak to us.  Perhaps this is another major sign that blogs are becoming increasingly important to designers and a potent alternative (or complement) to traditional media.

In addition to meeting some interesting bloggers from all over the US and Canada, I gleaned some valuable information from the guests and key note speakers.  However, I couldn’t let Day 1 pass me by without a fashion show.  I was very excited about being invited to see Marlon Gobel’s FW11 fashion show at the historic Park Avenue Armory.  This was Marlon’s second solo show (he’s worked with Thom Browne and Michael Bastian in the past) and honestly believe that he is one of the absolute best emerging designers in men fashion.  Keep on eye out for this guy, his stuff is incredible.  More on Marlon’s show in a later post, for now please visit my Facebook Page for NYFW Day 1 photo highlights.
